Whether you enjoy a gentle amble or something more energetic, walks can start right from the door.
Skelwith Force is just a five minute walk away. The level path continues along the riverside to Elterwater, with picture-postcard views all the way.
There are so many magnificent fell walks for the more energetic, both in the immediate locality or further afield. Climb England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, Great Gable or Helvellyn. Close at hand are the Langdale Pikes, Bowfell and many more.
For short trips further afield, Little Greenbank is in a perfect location for exploring the area. There are five directions to choose from radiating from your doorstep at Skelwith Bridge.
Many of our guests are delighted to see so many different birds in the garden. We frequently have great spotted woodpeckers, nuthatches, long-tailed tits and lots more eating from our feeders – all to be seen from your armchair. We are occasionally visited by a sparrowhawk. There are kingfishers on the river and a sighting is a rare treat. The osprey nest yearly by Bassenthwaite Lake.
Shopping doesn’t end in Ambleside! Ever popular is the Lakeland flagship store in Windermere and a new retail outlet village has opened in Kendal.
If gardening is your passion, both Ambleside and Grasmere have very good garden centres and the Lakeland Horticultural Society’s garden at Holehird is a wonderful experience all year round. There is also a yearly garden festival at Holker Hall.
